Building relationships and the process of cultivation is complex; it takes time and can be resource intensive.  We have found that donor cultivation takes on average 12 to 24 months.  One of the key factors in the success of the process is the partnership between the Board and the staff.  The pipeline process has six components; (1) ignorance (2) awareness (3) interest (4) experience (5) participation and (6) ownership.  BHA works with the Board and staff on developing skills and strategies for cultivating prospects by building sustainable relationships and understanding donor engagement and commitment.  Each of the components of the process needs to be understood and a "moves management" system needs to be put in place.  The impact on the organization of a successful donor pipeline can be transformational with regard to ongoing revenue.
